Going Low-Fat: General Guidelines for Choosing Foods

Building your meals from foods naturally low in fats such as fruits, vegetables, grains, and beans is a smart way to start. Preparing foods without added fats or oils is the next step. Of course, avoiding products from animal sources is necessary to keeping your fat intake low.

  • Read product labels. Choose foods that have no more than 1 gram of fat per 100 calories. Generally, this is no more than 2 to 3 grams of fat per label serving.
  • For most people, it's best to consume no more than 20 to 30 grams of fat per day.
