Red Foods

Like yellow and orange foods, red ones add visual interest to a meal. Cherries, cranberries, pomegranates, raspberries, watermelon, strawberries, and red apples and grapes are well–loved red fruits. Beets, radishes, sweet red peppers, red onions, red potatoes, and tomatoes are health–giving red vegetables. Red beans and kidney beans contain important phytochemicals and nutrients as well.

Other possibilities:

  • Just about any dessert or breakfast is made more beautiful and delicious with the addition of strawberries or raspberries as a topping or a garnish.
  • Try broiling pink grapefruit topped with cinnamon and a drizzle of maple syrup for a delicious dessert or first course.
  • Invent an all–red chili. Start with cooked kidney beans and add red onions, red peppers, red potatoes, and chopped tomatoes. Cook for an hour and season with chili powder.
  • Cranberries are delicious any time of year. Try adding fresh cranberries to recipes for baked goods or dried cranberries to trail mix or breakfast cereal.
  • Pomegranate seeds make a beautiful addition to green salads, fruit cups, and mashed sweet potatoes.
