White Foods

Even some white foods are packed with disease–fighting phytochemicals. Mushrooms, onions, cauliflower, and turnips are good examples. Mostly white food flavorings such as garlic and ginger are also full of health–giving substances. Many nuts, seeds, and grains are excellent sources of nutrients.

Here are some menu ideas:

  • Try a portabella mushroom sandwich for lunch or dinner.
  • Cauliflower and potatoes are a delicious addition to an Indian– or Thai–style curry.
  • Add a few chopped pecans to your morning cereal or try Brazil nuts or sunflower seeds on your spinach salad.
  • Roasted root vegetables such as turnips, rutabaga, and fingerling potatoes tossed with herbs are a great fall or winter dish.
  • Chopped sweet onions can be added to most any cooked savory dish and give a pleasant bite to chopped vegetable, bean, or grain salads.
