Kids: Birthday Party Menus

Birthdays and other parties are a time for joy and celebration—and healthful food choices can be part of the fun. When you're the host, it’s easy to serve vegetarian versions of party favorites. If you are a guest, you may wish to bring a dish or dessert to pass around at the party.

Try these healthy food ideas:

  • Hot dogs: Vegan hot dogs are widely available. Try some of the following brands: Lightlife Smart Dogs or Tofu Pups, Yves Veggie Wieners or Tofu Wieners. Baked beans, veggie chili, relish, ketchup, and mustard go well with any of these.
  • Veggie burgers: You’ll find them at most grocery or health–food stores. Try some of the following brands: Boca Burgers, Garden Vegan, or Harvest Burgers. Add the usual toppings—ketchup, mustard, pickles, onions, lettuce, tomato, or relish.
  • Pizza: Spread tomato sauce on plain bagels or English muffins and top them with a variety of fresh vegetables, such as chopped onions, mushrooms, peppers, broccoli, or olives. Add a sprinkle of soy cheese, if you like. A party idea for children is to make or purchase pizza dough and cut the dough into a variety of shapes. Have the children add the toppings and bake.

Pair any of these with simple but delicious favorites such as corn–on–the–cob, applesauce, steamed carrots, or “squeezy beans” (known to adults as boiled soybeans in the pod).
