Making Sense of Foods

Understanding Soy Foods: The Bottom Line

The best advice is to emphasize the whole, and least processed, sources of soy, including edamame, tempeh, tofu, and soymilk, as part of a diet built from other legumes, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables.

Veggie “meats” and dairy replacements may be helpful for people transitioning from meat and dairy–based diets and moving along a path to a healthful, whole food, vegetarian diet.

Veggie luncheon meats are low in fat and make great replacements for meaty sandwiches. Soymilk lattes make it possible to still have your usual morning pick–me–up treat. Veggie burgers, now widely available at many restaurants, make it easy to keep eating a healthy diet when eating out or traveling. They are also useful when trying to help a friend or family member switch to a healthier diet.
